Research has found out that deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest will rise by 22 percent in one year. Brazil’s national space research institute INPE has said that the forest has lost 13,235 square kilometres area from August 2020 to July 2021.
Under the Bolsonaro government, this is the third time there is an increase in the deforestation in the rainforest. Opposition party blames him for his encouragement in farming and mining.
INPE has recorded that October was the worst month in their record for deforestation. Record shows that more than half the size of the city of Rio de Janeiro has been cleared of the rainforest.
Brazil was among those countries who made a pledge at the COP26 summit in Glasgow to end deforestation by 2030.
Bolsonaro has also pledged to stop deforestation in the giant South American country by 2028.
NGOs, indigenous groups and the political opposition has also accused the president for weakening environmental safeguards.
10,129 km of the rainforest were cleared between August 2018 and July 2019.
