The Netherlands is not on course to achieve the SDGs

The Netherlands will not achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.This will not be achieved by any single country at this pace. The sixth national SDG report and the CBS Monitor, published on 18 May 2022, came to this conclusion.WOTRO is part of the steering group of SDG-Nederland and contributes to the SDG report on behalf of NWO.

University of the Netherlands‘ SDG Barometer shows that between 2015 and 2020, the number of scientific publications related to the SDGs increased considerably from more than 3,000 to well over 5,000.The importance of the major global societal challenges in research is growing. We do not know yet what the societal impact of this research will be, but universities, applied sciences, and NWO are focusing more on societal outcomes. The SDGs are also mentioned increasingly in instruments such as the Dutch Research Agenda and the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant.

The SDGs are a golden thread for NWO-planned WOTRO programs.WOTRO seeks to contribute to solutions for the SDGs through research, with a particular focus on the local fulfillment of the SDGs in poor and middle-income countries.

The Dutch government, the Association of Netherlands Municipalities, partly on behalf of the Interprovincial Overleg (IPO), and the Union of Water Boards for decentral governments, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), Global Compact Netwerk Nederland and MVO Nederland for industry and financial institutions, Partos for civil society organizations, and NWO-WOTRO for the know-how collaborated on the sixth National SDG Report (in Dutch).
