Searching for new planets with a new solar telescope

A new astronomical instrument named NEID, the NN-explore Exoplanet Investigations with Doppler spectroscopy, has come online to help scientists find out new alien worlds. As there are thousands of alien worlds beyond our solar system that we do not know about. Many of these worlds many have life in it that is waiting to be discovered.

The Texas Advanced Computing Centre is aiding the expertise of NEID to find new worlds. NEID is a special type of spectrograph attached to the WIYN 3.5m telescope of Arizona observatory.

NEID breaks down visible light from distant stars into its component wavelengths with a spectrograph. In this spectrograph light signatures are recorded by a detector.

NEID collects about 150 gigabytes of light data and sent it to Texas Advanced Computing Centre for processing. TACC has newly developed automated computational pipeline for NEID data.
